While it may still be a little warm in Middle Georgia, fall is in full swing nearby. Here’s three fall getaways close enough for a weekend trip sure to be filled with cool weather and trees of red, orange and yellow:

1. Biltmore Estate

Located in Asheville, North Carolina, Biltmore is the perfect vacation spot for history lovers and fall fanatics alike. The estate was built from 1889 to 1895 by the Vanderbilt family, according to the Biltmore Estate website, and is a five hour drive from Macon. Exploring the massive home and its gardens will be made even more beautiful by the changing leaves. At night, be sure to visit downtown Asheville for eats, sweets and drinks. For more information, visit the Biltmore Estate website.

2. Great Smoky Mountains

The Smoky Mountains is a weekend retreat four to five hours from home. Townsend and Gatlinburg are two cities in the Smoky Mountains filled with fun fall activities. For a more relaxing trip, stay in Townsend and visit Cade’s Cove, a National Park known for the occasional black bear sighting. After hiking in the park, enjoy the tranquil Little Tennessee River beside a bonfire with friends or from a cabin porch. I recommend staying at the Riverstone Lodge which is located right on the river and in the center of Townsend’s tourist activities. Gatlinburg, however, is filled with museums, restaurants and shopping, making for a more action-packed trip. From theme parks to dinner shows to arcades, there is no shortage of activities for travelers of every age. Visit the Smoky Mountains website for more information.

3. Nantahala River

Only four hours away, the Nantahala River offers a wide variety of outdoor activities at low temperatures for adventurous travelers. I recommend staying at the Nantahala Village because of its cabin-style rooms and mountain views. From horseback riding to zip lining to hiking, the Nantahala river is a gorgeous backdrop for a quick fall getaway. And, if you are daring enough to raft the Class IV rapids in cool weather, be sure to stop by Pizza by the River for a homemade slice before finishing the river’s largest rapid. For more information on the Nantahala River, visit the Nantahala Outdoor Center’s website.
