An Explainer: Recycling In Macon

Macon-Bibb county offers curbside recycling pick-up to its residents twice a month.

When? Your recycling is picked up every other week on the same day of the week as your garbage and yard debris pickup. You can see what day of the week your pickups are by entering your address here.

What is it going to cost me? Recycling service is included in Macon-Bibb residents’ normal monthly garbage fees.

What can I recycle? Plastic bottles and caps, plastic jars, soda cans, food cans, milk and juice jugs, food boxes, cardboard and paper can all be recycled.

What cannot be recycled? Plastic grocery bags, styrofoam, take out containers, pizza boxes, wet or shredded paper, glass, milk and juice cartons, baby diapers, aerosol cans, batteries, hypodermic needles, ceramic items and paint or any other toxic substances should not be placed in your recycling bins.

Why can glass not be recycled in Macon-Bibb? Glass cannot be recycled in Macon-Bibb. The reason being that it is too fragile and often breaks during transportation. Since Bibb county uses a single stream system, it causes issues during the recycling process.

Why should I even bother to recycle? Recycling helps reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. This helps reduces your impact on the earth and helps preserve the environment for years to come.  

What if I live in an apartment and want to recycle? Recycling for those living in apartments or multi-family dwellings can be taken to local fire stations. The fire stations on Forsyth Street, Jones Road, Coliseum Drive and Riverside Drive all accept recycling.
