Five bizarre last meal requests of death row inmates

We’ve all wondered what our last meal would be if we were placed on death row. Some people opt for a five-course meal, fast food or even their own mother’s cooking. So, if these are the norm, what are the weirdest or craziest last meals that have been requested while on death row?

1. A lump of dirt

James Edward Smith was charged of robbery and murder in March 1983. Authorities say that he requested a lump of dirt as his last meal. According to a website called Murderpedia, Smith explained that he would use it to mark his body so that his spirit would move on and not become a ghost. His request was denied and he was given yogurt instead before his execution.

2. A single olive

Authorities believe Victor Feguer kidnapped a doctor in an attempt to learn how to make drugs. When the doctor declined to help him, Feguer shot him in the head and dumped his body in a cornfield. Feguer was charged with kidnapping, robbery and murder in March of 1963. He was the last person put to death in the state of Iowa, and was sentenced to death by hanging.

According to Murderpedia, Feguer asked for a single olive with the pit still in it for his last meal. He told guards he hoped an olive tree would sprout from his grave as a sign of peace. After Feguer was pronounced dead, authorities found the pit from the olive in one of his suit pockets.

3. A child

In 2014, a Facebook article was circulating stating that convicted cannibal Steven K. Walker requested a child for his last meal. Snopes has since discredited this claim, and has found the article to have been posted on a satirical site called “Hip-Hop Hangover”.

4. Room Temperature Spaghetti

Thomas Grasso was convicted of robbery and murder. According to officials, Grasso strangled an 87-year-old woman with her own Christmas tree lights during a home invasion and an 81-year-old man six months later in a separate robbery. Grasso’s last meal consisted of two dozen steamed mussels, two dozen steamed clams, a double cheeseburger from Burger King, a half-dozen barbecued spare ribs, two strawberry milkshakes, one-half of a pumpkin pie with whipped cream, diced strawberries and SpaghettiOs that he did not receive.

Instead, he was given spaghetti that was supposedly too warm. His last words purportedly were used to show his distaste in the kitchen staff for not fulfilling his request. According to The Telegraph, he issued his final statement less than an hour before he died, saying, “I did not get my SpaghettiOs, I got spaghetti. I want the press to know this.”

5. Pizza for the homeless

Philip Ray Workman was an inmate on death row in Tennessee after he was convicted of murdering a police officer at a Wendy’s during a robbery. Before he was executed by lethal injection in May of 2007, he allegedly requested for his last meal to be a vegetarian pizza donated to any homeless person. As stated by the Office of the Clark County Prosecuting Attorney documents, police officials did not honor his request, as they do not donate to charities. According to Business Insider, members of the community, however, delivered pizzas to the homeless themselves in Workman’s honor.
