Four Classic Games to Rewatch at Home

If you are like me, a huge, diehard sports fan, you are probably at least a little bummed about the suspension of sporting events across the globe. From basketball to baseball to even the Olympics, life sure seems empty for people who enjoy sports especially as an escape from current world issues. Fear not, though. There are many ways to enjoy sports without them happening live. Here are four classic games to rewatch at home.

1. 10/28/1995: World Series Game 6 — Atlanta Braves vs. Cleveland Indians

Call me biased for being an Atlanta Braves fan, but I am sure that this game is one that many people who hail from the state of Georgia will enjoy. In game 6 of the 1995 World Series, the Atlanta Braves, who had been to the World Series three previous times this decade, were looking to finally get the job done in front of their home crowd. It was the pitching-dominant Braves taking on the big bats of the Cleveland Indians. Tom Glavine pitched his way to a one-hit shutout of the Indians, and David Justice’s home run in the sixth inning was all that was needed for the “Team of the ‘90s” to take its World Championship. Tom Glavine would win World Series MVP for his efforts.

2. 11/02/2016: World Series Game 7 — Cleveland Indians vs. Chicago Cubs

If you are as much of a baseball fan as I am, you will love watching this game again. With both the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians looking to shed long title droughts, this game was the most important. Looking to complete a rally from down three games to one earlier in the Series, this one was the most important. The game started with the Cubs taking the lead and the Indians tying it in the third. The Cubs added four more runs, and the game seemed finished in the eighth inning until Rajai Davis’s three-run home run tied it 6-6 forcing the game to extra innings. After a brief rain delay, the Cubs took the lead with two runs in the 10th, and one more Cleveland run could not stop the Lovable Losers from winning their first World Championship since 1908.

3. 02/02/2020: Super Bowl 54 — Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers

This may have just happened recently, but it was an instant classic. The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers clashed in Miami with something to prove. The Chiefs were looking to give coach Andy Reid his first Super Bowl victory since he began coaching in 1999, and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was looking for redemption for his last time coaching in a Super Bowl. After both teams traded field goals and touchdowns in the first half, San Francisco seemingly took the game away leading 20-10 with less than seven minutes remaining in the game. Then, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes would carry the Chiefs to an improbable comeback with running back Damien Williams putting the nail in the coffin. Mahomes would win MVP for his performance and cement himself as one of the game’s greatest players today.

4. 06/19/2016: NBA Finals Game 7 — Golden State Warriors vs. Cleveland Cavaliers

The king was taking on a force. The Golden State Warriors finished the 2015-16 NBA season with an NBA-record 73 wins and led the Finals three games to one against LeBron James’s Cleveland Cavaliers. However, the Cavaliers pushed on to win the next two games and force this pivotal match-up in Oakland. The game was a back-and-forth affair with both teams in it all the way until the end. Cleveland, however, would pull away in the fourth quarter and win the game 93-89, giving the Cavaliers their first NBA title and the city of Cleveland its first major league championship in 52 years. Akron native LeBron James would win Finals MVP emotional and satisfied with fulfilling his promise of bringing a championship to Cleveland.
