‘Tis the season for embracing all that mother nature has to offer! It’s finally Fall, aka the best season in the South.

Spring in Georgia usually means amazing weather, radiant colors and a time for outdoor activities. If you want to take advantage of the sun, go out and visit these three trails in Middle Georgia that are excellent for those Springtime hikes:

1. Ocmulgee National Monument: Indian Mounds Trail

Location: 1207 Emery Highway, Macon

The Ocmulgee National Monument is the remain of a once thriving settlement of the Paleo-Indians that inhabited the area thousands of years ago. The hiking trails lead people to several sites at the park.

Some sites that are open for the public to examine include an earth lodge, a reconstructed ceremonial building with the original 1,000-year-old clay floor and sites of a former village. Come take a blast to the past and immerse yourself in history and nature. The hike is perfect for beginners. The loop hike is about three miles and is dog friendly. Parking and admission also included.

2. High Falls State Park

Location:  76 High Falls Park Drive, Monroe County

If you’re looking for a trail that will put you through a good workout and lead you to a great spot to cool off after, High Falls is the place to go. While on the double loop hike, people will be able to admire the scenery that lines the Towaliga River. The trail’s forest is filled with beautiful trees, massive boulders and your usual woodland animals.

High Falls is best known for its refreshing lake and multi-tiered waterfall. The nearest mountain trails with waterfalls are a two-hour drive away which makes this site a “must-do” hike for Middle Georgian’s. The trail itself is moderately easy and is pet friendly. The trails round trip is estimated to be just over a mile long. The trail is located at a state park which entails parking fees. The fee is five dollars unless you have a Georgia State Parks annual pass.
